A little while ago we hinted that we may have a CouchDB and PouchDB surprise for those of you interested in joining us at Local First Conf this year. Now we’re making it official: we’re hosting a small CouchDB & PouchDB Hackday on July 11!

Local First Conf#

2026 will see the third edition of Local First Conf happening in Berlin. In a world of cloud systems and online dependencies, Local First focuses on data ownership and privacy with systems where the network is optional by design. It’s about ensuring you always have access to your work, regardless of outages (notwithstanding your laptop battery), and where your data isn’t at the mercy of a hard drive countless kilometres away.

If you follow our Offline First work, this will sound familiar. We’re so excited to cross paths with a community that shares such a compatible vision for truly user-friendly software: you can read about our experience of last year’s conference and what we got up to. One of the things we’re very grateful we could do was introduce PouchDB to a new crowd.

CouchDB & PouchDB#

CouchDB is a pioneering replication database designed to tolerate unreliable networks and sync seamlessly. PouchDB is its client-side counterpart — and a pioneer of the thick client — lovingly known as the database in the browser.

As part of the 2025 conference edition, Neighbourhoodie’s Alex Feyerke demo’d how easy it is to get going with PouchDB. The workshop was such a success, we plan to be slightly more ambitious in sharing the tech we love this year.

Join Us#

Because the conference happens in our own backyard in Berlin, we’re planning to host a small Hackday in our office for anyone who will be around over the weekend. Local First Conf kicks off on Sunday at the Festsaal Kreuzberg. If you’re around on Saturday and want to meet up with others before the conference to play around with sync-pioneering tech, join us:

What to Expect#

Once you arrive, we’ll show you how to get started with CouchDB and PouchDB! We’ll have a CouchDB already running to help you make the most of the hack time. Folks from our team can show you some handy tips and tricks, or demo something that we‘re able to share.

If you would like help with your own existing CouchDB / PouchDB project, we’ll be there to assist.

If you’re already familiar with CouchDB and PouchDB you’re welcome to come and help newcomers explore, and we can also show you the ropes if you have ever wanted to contribute to either of these projects.

There’ll be some refreshments and light snacks, too.

Our office is close to the conference venue and in a neighbourhood with plenty of great dinner options — if you want to get a broader feel for the conference location and meet others from the Local First universe, come by.
